Hoo Needs a Reason
Becoming part of the Hereford community is one of the best ways to meet other students at the University and to interact with faculty on a less-formal basis. With the help of our excellent kitchen staff, each month Hereford hosts a college-wide banquet with student chosen themes such as Crab Fest, Asian and Mexican meals, Carnival, and Tapas. Additional activities throughout the year allow students to make lasting connections. These include pre-football game BBQs, an apple pie baking contest with apples picked from historic Carter Mountain, Halloween pumpkin carving, movie nights "Under the Stars" with popcorn and cotton candy in the Hereford amphitheater, mocktail parties, dances and late night exam period study breaks in Hereford's Green Room, The University's best Super Bowl party complete with burritos and Buffalo wings, an annual spring flag football tournament, and to top it all off, we celebrate the end of the year with "Hereford on the Lawn"- our dance formal with music and hors d'oeuvres at the faculty Colonnade Club. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment at Hereford!
ENRICHED LEARNING WITH HEREFORD FACULTY FELLOWS
Students in the College have the unique opportunity to take one of Hereford's 1-credit hour short courses taught by our select group of faculty fellows and coordinators of studies. Past offerings include: Local Foods: From Garden to Table, Waste Veggie Oil Fuel Technology, Shakespeare Stage and Screen, Pottery 101, Stained Glass, Professor's Choice Film Club, and Reading Moby Dick. Beyond the classroom, take the opportunity to join Principal Nancy Takahashi, her family, and a group of faculty fellows for home cooked meals at the principal's residence. You may also benefit from dessert discussions on stress and time management and enjoy our rotating student art shows and gala openings in Runk Dining Hall. Finally, all Hereford residents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to go green by participating in initiatives such as the Hereford Mini-Farm, and the construction and maintenance of our very own waste veggie oil fuel station!
STUDENT GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
In the spirit of Thomas Jefferson, Hereford College is a self-governed community, and students play a critical role in determining the activities and direction of the College. As a resident of Hereford, you may become a member of the Hereford Student Senate, an elected body that oversees the college programming and manages the college's $30,000+ programming fees budget. With the help of the college's Coordinators of Studies, students themselves set the agenda, and plan and organize many of the events, which include not only our many banquets and recreational activities, but community service as well. For instance, our annual 'Round the Grounds 5K Race for Charity, which is predominantly organized by Hereford students typically earns over $1000 in donations that benefit local families
TAKE PART IN SPECIAL FIELD TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS
Last, but not least, the college offers a diverse array of activities for the entire Hereford community.
