  • 11.15.2007 - Penny War!

So, What's A Penny War? Each house will be competing to see who can raise the most money to sponsor gift purchases for Madison House's Holiday Sharing program. One water jug is dedicated to each house.  Placing a penny in your house's jug will earn your house positive points.  Placing any other type of money in your house's jug (nickels, dimes, dollar bills, etc.) will earn your house negative points.  The idea is to place larger coins and dollar bills in the other houses jugs while placing as many pennies as you can in your house's jug. So, why are we doing this? Holiday Sharing sets up 4 trees around campus containing “angel" ornaments naming a type of gift to purchase and donate to the program.  The Hereford Student Senate is running a “Penny War” to collect funds to purchase gifts.  100% of the funds will go towards this charitable organization!  AND Hereford will match the total amount collected up to $200! We are accepting donations in Runk Dining Hall.

The Hereford Culinary Committee is an organization aiming to improve the quality of the dining experience at Runk Dining Hall. The Committee serves as a mediator between students and dining staff to create an environment that encourages a positive dining experience. Currently, the committee is working on a survey to get student feedback on the dining experience as a whole at Runk. The survey serves as an effort to improve communication between students and dining staff.  It will be available in early December. One element that has greatly improved communication has been the suggestion box. Chef Josh Windley would like to remind everyone to use the suggestion cards available in Runk. He will answer your questions and reply to suggestions personally, so students receive direct responses. If you do make a suggestion, you are asked to put the date and mealtime on it so that Chef Josh can better address your concerns.  -Kayla Ayers and the Culinary Committee

  • 11.15.2007 - Ring A Bell for The Salvation Army

Most of you are familiar with the Christmas Kettles program, where bell ringers are located at sites around town during the holiday season. This is an annual major fund raising effort through which the Army raises over $100,000 to support its many programs. This is a call-out to see if there would be interest in assembling a group of 10 of  us to host a Kettle site one day in early to mid December.  With two people ringing bells together in two-hour shifts, we could cover an entire day. The sites are at the  downtown Mall, Barracks Road, or Wal-Mart. We could choose the location and day in December. Ringing the bells is really a lot of fun and very interesting to see how the Charlottesville community gives so generously.  Principal Nancy Takahashi serves on the Advisory Board of the Charlottesville Salvation Army, which serves the most needy residents in our community. Contact her at takahashi {at} virginia {dot} edu if you are interested or if have any questions.

  • 08.23.2007 - New Chef In Town!

We are thrilled to have Josh Windley join us this year as Runk's new Executive Chef! Josh was born and raised in Miami, Florida and earned a degree from the Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida. He has been in the culinary field for 16 years and has worked at such establishments as The Breakers of Palm Beach, FL and The South River Restaurant & Wine Shop, serving both as Executive Chef. One of his major goals is to bring his knowledge of gourmet cuisine to UVA generally and to Runk, specifically. Ever a student of cuisine as well as a teacher, Josh has traveled to Europe, studying under renowned Chefs Peteá and Belaccini in France and Italy, respectively. While he believes that learning about cuisine continues throughout any fine chef's career, Josh also possesses a talent and a love for teaching about both the appreciation and the craft of the dining experience; we hope that Hereford students will brainstorm with Josh this fall about some ways he can put those teaching talents to good use for Hereford in the spring! We are excited about Josh's philosophy for his work at Runk, which he recently expressed as: "We are not a cafeteria, we are a restaurant." When Josh takes his chef's hat off at the end of the day, he enjoys spending as much time with his family as possible. He has been married for six years and he and his wife have two children: daughter Lidia Page (5) and son Tylor Reid (16 months this fall). He enjoys teaching his wife to cook with a gourmet flair, hosting guests around the table at his Staunton home for food and wine pairings, and practicing Jet Kun Do. However, don't be intimidated by the fact that Josh is a second degree blackbelt! Josh is very approachable and welcomes you to stop by with your ideas, questions, and concerns. Maybe you'll have the opportunity to take a cooking class or sit in on a seminar on appreciating fine cuisine with Chef Josh before the year is up!
